I suppose it boils down to personal preference but I prefer the workflow in Aperture. I've never found iPhoto's editing capabilities to be adequate, and prior to Aperture, had always used Photoshop Elements as an external editor, an option still available in Aperture for edits requiring masks etc.

Regarding integration with iLife etc., I don't know which version of Aperture you tried but my Aperture library is available alongside my iPhoto library from iWork or Mail and can also be used by iPhoto itself when creating photobooks.

I prefer the non-destructive editing of Aperture and the fact that it only stores one master image, no matter how many versions of that image I create, whereas iPhoto creates a duplicate each time. I also make heavy use of the watermarking feature when uploading to Flickr or MobileMe.

The issues I do find with Aperture are that the library structure and tag handling are weaker than iPhoto and the fact that iTunes forces me to choose between Aperture and iPhoto for syncing to AppleTV and iPhone, so I will export processed images back into iPhoto. Why can't it sync with both?
