1. NPR News

Respected news and current affairs from US National Public Radio (NPR) with a chance to catch up in bite size chunks with NPR daily output or listen live to any of the 800 public radio stations that broadcast online.

Great selection of fairly mainstream news mixed with obscure stories that don’t get widespread coverage along with great coverage of the arts. Recently added the ability to tune in live for breaking news and other special coverage. Proof that not all US citizens are big boned burger munching Yanks. [Link]

2. Pro Wrestling Torch/ProWrestling.net

Two excellent apps for fans of pro wrestling, myself included. Covers news, results, reviews and gossip from WWE, TNA and the indies. Yes, I’m a 40 something professional fan. Pro Wrestling Torch also has an app for MMA fans, which is also free. [Link]

3. SomaFM Player

Streaming live online SomaFM offers a range of exceptional music only stations for more than 10 years. The app puts these in an intuitive interface that allows to tag bands and songs you want to investigate later. A great app for late night listening with headphones despite the streaming quality limitations. [Link]

4. TVGuide.co.uk

Free UK focused TV guide with more channel choices than you could ever need. Lots of channels well known and popular and obscure and unloved. Want to what’s on Zone Horror at 2am in the morning? There’s an app for that. A must have and Macworld Five Star Editors’ Choice. [Link]

5. Weather Pro

Another Macworld Five Star Editors’ Choice and must have app, accurate and detailed weather reports. 800,000 locations worldwide updated three-hourly. Has proved useful for planning that rare day out. Never leave home without it unless you live in Antarctica or the middle of a desert. [Link]
