iChat, the Apple’s world of IM, is an instant messenger application that supports many protocols, and now has an additional one – for Yahoo IM.
Microsoft and Yahoo came up with the chat only gateway to work with their services, and so did ICQ and AOL. Apart from these cases, if you want to send and receive messages from a user who is using another chat method must use some kind of multiprotocol client and make separate accounts for different chat services.
Apart from that, you can also arrange your very own gateway server. You can also use external gateways that log into your account to hike messages between different types of accounts.
iChat 6 of OS X Lion adds support for Yahoo IM, though this service only has text chat ability. This would make iChat users get to use different chat accounts. They already had support for Gmail chat, Jabber, along with video chat on ICQ, AOL and MobileMe.
Though Lion works with Yahoo account, the MSN and Yahoo gateway does not look in working condition.
Now that iChat has more functionality, which one would you like to use? Which of these new features do you want to try asap? Let us know what you think.
