Nice article :). Just wanted to say that in FCE you can switch to "Unlimited RT" in stead of "Safe RT" on your time line, then you can preview the movie without having to render.

iMovie '09 does have 2 audio layers "Use multiple audio tracks for music, sound effects — even a voiceover track you can record right in iMovie."

iMovie '09 has replaced iMovie HD (version 6) for me, '08 couldn't, but '09 has resolved many issues, and is much much faster than HD was at doing actual editing.
I did what I was originally expecting to be a rough-cut of a wedding in about 4-5 hours total time using footage from 2 cameras, transitions, titles. In the end it's a near final cut, just need to merge in some stills, add in a second audio layer for part of it, and its done. The stabilization processing did take a while though, that was done on all of the footage a couple of days before I sat down to do the actual editing.
I would estimate almost 3x as much time to do the same thing in iMovie HD, based on a similar project I did the year before. iMovie '08 wasn't up to doing that project, but based on doing this new project, iMovie '09 would have made it easier and faster.

And in between both was iMovie HD. Fast, simple, great power and free on new macs back in the day. R.I.P.

FCE still has a huge learning curve though I have used it for very complex multi-camera projects. iMovie HD with the ability to handle new video camera formats (AVCHD) would have been perfect for the prosumer wanting to make midsize projects.

I will use iMovie HD for routine work until it just won't run on a computer I own.

The new iMovie limitations are just too great for anyone doing elegent short movies.
